Religious rant... Feel free to share your opinions or to ignore this altogether. The fantastic news we've gotten recently making all marriage legal has caused a lot of discussion, and I figured I'd share my point of view, maybe somebody will learn something by reading this.
I don't usually share my opinions as in-depth as this, but this is also one of the bigger events in history I've seen.

I've never identified with Christianity but obviously I've grown up around it and also done my own reading about it on my own time and watched TV shows/documentaries about it so I'm not totally ignorant to what the religion is about. So, I don't know it inside and out.

The bible was written to cater to a society that is 100% different from how we live today, I do know that much. This becomes evident in the bizarre rules it lays out for its readers that I'd say 99% of Christians ignore because it's simply impossible to apply these rules to human society today. e.g. do not wear clothing that is made of 2 different types of material woven together, do not eat shrimp, do not eat pork, do not plant 2 different types of seeds in 1 field. The list of weird rules goes on, and the list of inapplicable rules includes homosexuality. Of course, for a society that is in its beginning with very few humans, they would want to create as many babies as possible. To build the human race. So it makes sense to ban relationships that would not produce babies, if populating the Earth was the goal.

But, at 7.3 billion humans, I think it's safe to say that this set of rules for a beginning society to prosper do not apply anymore. It's not the stone ages in 2015. And, yeah, most people only WANT to follow the good things the bible teaches, of course they do, it's the easiest and makes the most sense. But that is not what you signed up for when you decided you wanted to be a Christian. You do not get to pick your favorite parts and only abide by some rules that you think are the best or most relevant to today's society. You're following 1 book, that was written however long ago, which means you are following EVERYTHING that is inside of it. And if you're not following everything the bible says, what is the point? By definition, you are not a Christian if you do not follow everything in the bible. If the bible is sacred, and nothing is more true and holy than Jesus' word, you should respect it in its entirety, yes? Not ignore parts of it?

So what makes people think they can ignore all of the zany rules in the bible, but focus on what little it says about homosexuality, and feel they have a right to talk bad about them or make homosexuals feel lesser than themselves? Christians' logic is always full of holes. Which is why I will never agree with people who call themselves Christians, and the only people I can respect for being Christian are people like the Phelps family, who take it extremely seriously and do it as it's supposed to be done; crazily, and totally detached from today's world. Because that is what it is. I'm happy that people find happiness and comfort from Christianity, but that is the only positive thing I can say and the only thing I can agree with. Mostly, I think it makes people look like hypocritical fools.

Love and happiness will always win. Every single time. People deserve to be happy in their short lifetimes on Earth, and the support and positivity I've seen being spread around for this step forward for equality has made me SO happy. The future looks bright for a diverse and accepting society, and not one stuck in the stone ages. How awesome are we? :D

I was listening to NPR and this guy was saying "I love the homosexual community, but they shouldn't be allowed to get married because it's not a right that belongs to them. It's a religious sanction for a man and a woman."

Oh, is it? Is that why so many people get married just to end up getting divorced? Is that why so many people have families fall apart at the seams because they think marriage will somehow solve their issues?

I don't normally delve into this topic because I'm one of those radical agnostic libertarian "legalize all the things" types, but my jimmies were getting rather rustled at this guy who claimed to love a community but wouldn't let them be part of what in his mind was basically an exclusive club. And he was talking about how he hoped they could get it repealed. I guess that's why they call it CONgress!

I think the older generation is getting worried because Christianity is pretty much dying off the way they remember it. When it was okay to segregate based on sexuality, gender, color, and many things that this day in age it's just frowned upon to do so by the vast majority. That is, unfortunately, one of the biggest problems with religious beliefs is somehow segregation gets sprinkled on quite thick. Practically every religion from what I've seen, not just Christianity.

A lot of people still have some waking up to do. However, it's wonderful the Supreme Court finally let this pass, and I hope more moves like this are down the pipeline. I just hope things like TPP, Net Neutrality, and HR 4432 don't get shadowed out because of it.
